If you haven’t used finasteride before to tackle your hair loss, then you probably have some questions left which are unanswered. Here we try to give you those answers.
What is finasteride and how does it work?
Finasteride is the active ingredient in tablets marketed under the names Propecia and Proscar, as well as many other generic brands. Finasteride is used as a remedy for hair loss, also called male baldness (androgenetic alopecia). It works by blocking the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), with the latter being present on the scalp causing the loss of hair. DHT causes your hair follicles to lose hair, therefore going for example from 3 hairs in a follicle to only 1 hair. In addition the hairs will become thinner. While it looks like you have no hair you might actually still have active hair follicles. Once you start taking finasteride the active hair follicles will be able to regenerate as they are not attached by DHT anymore, and thus you might experience hair regrowth!
How frequently do I have to take finasteride?
Finasteride should be taken once a day and the dosage is approximately 1mg. You will need to take the tablets in perpetuity, in other words, once you stop taking finasteride your hair loss will reoccur eventually. And thus it is important that you find a supplier with pure quality finasteride from a reliable, traceable source and at fair prices. You might want to take into account the cost per tablet when deciding for which brand you go.
What happens if I forgot to take finasteride for a day?
Not a problem at all. Just make sure you don’t miss for too long and too often. You want to avoid high fluctuations in the concentration of testosterone and dihydrotestosterone in your body.
What is the difference between 1mg and 5mg finasteride tablets?
Besides the amount of the active ingredient finasteride, there is no difference. The reason that finasteride tablets are marketed in 1mg and mg5 is because it serves a difference purpose in these amounts. The 1mg tablets are effective against hair loss in men, whereas the 5mg tablets are also effective against an enlarged prostate. For hair loss treatment you can either take the 1mg tablets or cut a 5mg tablet into 4 or 5 parts to approximate the appropriate dosage. The 1mg finasteride tablets are more convenient but the 5mg tablets are heaps cheaper! In perpetuity…
How long does it take to see growth improvements?
This differs between men but in general you will notice it within 4-8 weeks although sometimes it might take longer. However, finasteride works! Just make sure you start with it on time without having lost too many hair follicles so that even hair regrowth on previously bald spots on your scalp will occur. Often your hair may start shedding once you start taking finasteride, this is completely normal and there is no need to worry because the hair will grow back. Thicker hairs and more of them will grow out of the hair follicles.
For how long will one box of finasteride last?
This depends on the amount of tablets and whether it contains 1mg or 5mg of finasteride. Suppose you order a box with 12 tablets that contain each 5mg of finasteride. You need to take more or less 1mg finasteride once per day. You can split the 5mg tablets into four parts of each approximately 1.25mg, then you have enough supply for 48 days. You could also cut them into five parts of each approximately 1mg, then one box lasts for 2 months. Our 1mg tablets come in boxes of 28 tablets and therefore last for about 1 month.
Are there any side effects?
Just as with any other drug there is the possibility of side effects that may occur. According to the FDA the side effects for finasteride are allergic reactions including rash, itching, hives and swelling of the lips, tongue, throat, and face. Is has been widely discussed that finasteride for the treatment of balding in men can also cause sexual side effects although this is only speculative and thus the FDA doesn’t state this. Some studies have shown that between 2.1% and 3.8% of the men taking 1mg of finasteride experience negative sexual side effects related to getting an erection, sperm count, and libido. If you think you suffer from any of these side effects, then it is recommended to stop taking finasteride tablets. We highly recommend the following finasteride article for further study if you wish.
